Our activities include hiking, backpacking, camping, rock climbing, kayaking, snorkeling, off-road
adventures, social gatherings, game nights and special events throughout the year. Each
chapter sponsors their own trip calendar, so at any one time there are a number of activities to
choose from.
Great Outdoors, Inc. sponsor two special all-chapter events each year, Jamboree and
Conference. All Great Outdoors chapters participate to promote inter-chapter unity, encourage
fellowship and to exchange ideas.
We also sponsor a Wilderness Education program. The program covers outdoors survival, first
aid principles, and how to reduce the environmental impact while visiting all that nature provides.
The San Diego Chapter of the Great Outdoors is currently seeking new members and is looking
forward to becoming an outstanding addition to the California Great Outdoors and the Greater
San Diego Gay Community.
Please join us in one of our may upcoming events.

I'm not a member of Great Outdoors, can I still go on one of your activities?
Yes, our events are also open to non-members, unless it is specifically stated (at this time
movie night is limited to members only). The advantages of membership are reduced rates for
outings and receiving the monthly newsletter with upcoming events. Check the membership
page for more info.

I've found an outing I'd like to attend, now what?
Contact the trip leader and request the trip notes and registration form. Be sure any physical
problems or allergies are noted on your trip registration form. Some of the more popular
outings will fill up very quickly, so mailing in your registration early increases your chances of
getting included. Check the trip notes for the registration deadline.

What kind of preparation do I need before going on an outing?
Before each overnight outing, there is a warm-up meeting, It's a good opportunity to meet your
trip leader and some of the people you'll be camping with and go over what you should bring,
arrange carpooling, form food groups, pool resources and address any other questions you
may have. Attending the monthly gives you the chance to meet talk to others about equipment,
supplies etc. Visit the essentials page to see the recommended 10 essentials. If you cannot
attend the warm-up meeting, be sure to call the trip leader to verify receipt of registration and
any other information. If, after you are registered for an outing, you should decide not to go on
a trip, please extend the leader the courtesy of calling.

What should I do when I get there?
Check in with the camp leader first. After checking in, get your tent set-up and your gear
squared away before engaging in any activity. While in camp be considerate of other campers.
Drugs, excessive alcohol, radios (other than Walkman type) and excessive noise are
discouraged. Quiet time at the campground is usually 10:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. You're welcome
to join in any of the planned activities, or you may want to just relax, and enjoy the scenery.
Tea time and campfire is a time for social exchange as well as a time for sharing information
about activities, etc.

Is your group just men? What percentage of your members are women?
We welcome women to join our group and become involved in our organization. Right now the
majority of our members are male. With the percentage of women at about 13 percent.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'd love to go camping but, my partner doesn't like roughing it, what can I do?
Dump him and get yourself a real man! Just kidding. Depending on the particular campground,
there's usually a wide range of comfort levels. Some of our past outings have included hot
shower facilities as well as electricity, check trips notes for the particulars. Maybe you could
start out with a resort or cabin trip, then work your way up to a camp out.

The Great Outdoors is a non-profit, all-volunteer gay and lesbian organization
dedicated to the enjoyment of outdoor recreation. We are the largest gay
outdoor recreational organization in Southern California and include chapters
in San Diego, Los Angeles, Santa Barbara/Ventura, Orange Co./Long Beach,
and Palm Springs. Our outings including camping, hiking, backpacking, rock
climbing as well as local activities such as game nights and social events..
The group was founded in 1978 by gay leaders who felt the time had come
for a viable, healthy alternative to the bars. The community reacted with great
enthusiasm and in August 1978 over 75 men and women from San Francisco
to San Diego backpacked into Big Sur. Since that time, Great Outdoors has
grown to over 800 members.
We are a member of IGLOO, a network of gay and lesbian clubs and
organizations throughout the world dedicated to outdoor activities of a non
